Fools for Scandal
by Gene Lyons
Ancient history? Maybe. But this is an important book, especially
given the way the media currently coddles the Bush regime. The
media's actions during the whole Whitewater non-scandal were reprehensible,
and should never be forgotten.

Jews
for Buchanan
by John Nichols
This book is simply wonderful, and I can't believe it took me
so long to get around to it. Nichols explains in clear, concise
sections exactly how the election was stolen, with a special emphasis
on Palm Beach County and the butterfly ballots. A must-read for
any patriotic American.
(Note: My local library ordered this book at my request -- you
should do the same, if yours doesn't have it!)

"Did
the Bush administration engage the Taliban in secret negotiations just
prior to 9/11, negotiations that directly led to the terrorist attacks?
Did the Taliban then decide to pre-emptively attack the U.S. before they
could be attacked themselves?"

The Court and the
Constitution
by Archibald Cox
Archibald Cox, who was Solicitor General in the early 60s and
served as the first Watergate Special Prosecutor, gives us the
history of how the Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution.
It does get a little bit dry at times, but overall is a good read,
and it's a great resource for anyone who wants to learn more about
the history of the Supreme Court.

Deterring
Democracy
by Noam Chomsky
What can you say about a Chomsky book other than "READ IT!".
This is, embarrassingly, my first Chomsky book, and I'm just blown
away. It should be required reading for all citizens. In this book,
Chomsky discusses the many ways in which the U.S. has exploited
and continues to exploit other countries -- from Nicaragua to Panama
to the Phillippines -- in the name of 'promoting democracy'. Read
it, read it, read it. |

The
Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the
Constitution and Chose Our President
Vincent Bugliosi
Bugliosi's article about the USSC's criminal decision in
Bush v Gore, 'None Dare Call it Treason', was published
in The Nation in February and generated a larger response
from readers than any other article in the magazine's (136
year) history. And little wonder. Vincent Bugliosi is one
of the true heroes of the movement, and this book - an expanded
version of the original article - needs to be read by every
person in this country. Bugliosi proves beyond a shadow
of a doubt that the Felonious Five belong BEHIND BARS.

Up from Conservatism:
Why the Right Is Wrong for America
Michael Lind
A devastating account of what is wrong with the modern-day Republican
party, from a former Republican. Lind's book is an absolute must
for anyone who wants to argue intelligently about the inherent fallacy
of right-wing policies; I've found it to be an invaluable resource. |

|
Shrub:
The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush
Molly Ivins
Written before the coup, this irreverent, fact-filled book is not
only a hell of a good read, but also a great resource. Molly has
said "It seems to me one obligation of citizenship is to be
as well-informed as one has time to become." The great thing
about writers like Molly Ivins is that they make learning fun.

Supreme
Injustice: How the High Court Hijacked Election 2000
Alan Dershowitz
Alan Dershowitz was, to my knowledge, the first person to
use the term "coup" in reference to the right-wingers'
actions in November and December. In 'Supreme Injustice',
Dershowitz gives us facts and compelling arguments to use
against those who still pretend that we had a democratic
election in November 2000, instead of a judicial coup d'etat.

THERE'S
NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BUT YELLOW STRIPES AND
DEAD ARMADILLOS
Jim Hightower
An absolute must-read for everyone. This book is FANTASTIC.
Hightower uses humor, facts and common sense to explain
why a progressive, populist government is exactly what this
country needs. Covering topics from Mad Cow disease to the
sorry state of campaign finance to the ridiculous notion
that people really want a 'centrist' goverment, Hightower
(one of my heroes) doesn't pull any punches. This book motivated
me to get off my rear and DO something; more so than any
other political book I've read.

WE'RE
RIGHT, THEY'RE WRONG
James Carville
The incomparable Carville on why liberals are right and conservatives
are wrong. This book is a little outdated, but is nevertheless
a must-read for all progressives. It's a GREAT reference tool;
I keep my copy by my desk at all times.

Molly
Ivins Can't Say That, Can She?
Molly Ivins
An oldie but goodie -- in addition to Molly's incomparable wit,
this book also serves as a reminder of just how bad the Reagan years
were. |
